Separated
I was taken from the land
Generations before my birth
Lost my roots within the soil
And the voices of the earth
Though thousands of years
This pavement has been poured
I will not be separated anymore.
.
I was taken from my tears
When I was just a child
Stuffed my feelings down a hole
As I tried my best to smile
Now I’m digging through the years
So deep and so sore
And I will not be separated anymore.
.
I was taken from my family
Of every sex and race
By what I was taught of color
Of gender and of place
Now I’m reaching out my hand
Hoping it won’t be ignored
And I will not be separated anymore.
